Sidewinders 12 Bandits 6 - the Bandits saved their best pitching for the Sidewinders. It was close for a few innings, but the bats came alive with John John and Jackson hitting balls to the right center field fence and both circling the bases for homeruns. Casey and Reese did well on the mound and kept the bandits in check. We had one big inning where everyone batted and we took the game. We had a REALLY strong (albeit small) cheering section behind home plate, and I think it worked, as many close calls went our way!!!
Sidewinders 17 Wildcats 3 - The bats really came alive in this game. I remember Casey, Jackson, Preston, John John, Reese, Noah, Haiden, Colton, Jack and Kevin all getting hits that either flew over, or were at least hit at the Wildcats outfielders. That is everyone in the lineup!!! Jack and Jackson had bunt singles in this game. One example of how ALIVE the bats were, in the top of the Fifth Casey made the first out, and the third out, in the same inning. Preston and John were in shut down mode on the mound. Kevin proved to be one of the toughest nine year olds in the world, taking a "shot" to the face from a bat (while trying to get back into the dugout) and despite a little blood, staying in the lineup and coming through with a big fly over the center fielder.
Sidewinders 10 Bobcats 0 - Preston, Reese and Jackson combined for a five inning shutout (one or two hits given up at the most). Our defense was stellar. John John caught a superb game. The bats remained hot, and the Bobcats caught a few shots to the outfield, or this game could have been even more lopsided.
Sidewinders 18 Wolfpack 0 - Casey and Jackson combined for a five inning shutout. I don't think the wolfpack got a hit. Our defense was superb. Colton took a throw from Reese at third and literally did the splits stretching from first and got the runner by an eyelash. The bats were really hot in this game, highlighted by Haiden's homerun. John John had a triple, his third of the tournament. Jack had one of the best bunt singles I have ever seen, I don't even think they threw to first. After the game, Coach Jeff informed the team that we owed the Utah Bandits a pizza party because they beat the Irish (who had been undefeated and doing very well) and we were "in" the championship.
Being "in" the championship was a big deal. As we pulled up, I thought we were playing the Utah Sting, as they were all there waiting to play. The Sting went 4-0 in the other pool, but we quickly learned the Idaho Falls Blaze had beat them out on a tiebreaker. It was pretty sad to see the Sting players pretty dejected and crying as they left the field. Making the championship round in these tournaments is not easy. The other highlight of showing up at the championship game was realizing we had our "friend" the old man ump from the Union League behind home plate. This would be Jeff's friend from the Horns game!!! He was just as thrilled to see us, as we were to see him.
Sidewinders 9 Idaho Falls Blaze 2 - Reese took the hill as we won the toss to be the home team. Reese was in shutdown form and the Blaze were in the field before they knew it. We took the bats and quickly jumped on the Blaze, scoring three. Highlighted by Reese hitting one well over the right fielder. The inning ended with Haiden hitting a line drive that the right fielder caught to literally save his front teeth. Reese went back to the mound and our defense was in great form. Jackson and Noah were very solid up the middle in this game, and we had many ground ball outs. We scored three more in the bottom of the second (I think) and then one more in the third, and two in the fourth or fifth. The middle of our lineup (Reese, Noah, Haiden, Colton) came up very big in this game. The game was 9-2 after four or five innings, and the pitchers on both teams took control.
The best I can recall the Blaze only hit one ball past our outfielders, and that might have scored their only two runs. After three innings Preston took over for Reese and it was lights out. The game ended on a bouncer that Noah flipped to Colton, and our boys all mobbed each other. I think some of the parents got some great photos after the game!
It was a fun two days. The only thing that would have made it better would have been having Baylor and Rob, and all the other parents there to be a part of it!
Meb
Reese ate two full racks of ribs to celebrate after the big game!
